JKH were invited to submit a design proposal for the replacement of a cast in-situ concrete structure to control water levels for Kings Lynn IDB. JKH’s design included accommodation for a 3m wide tilting weir, cranked debris grating, and panels light enough to be installed by the machinery available on site.

The design was approved and JKH proceeded to manufacture a series of 200mm thick precast concrete panels that could be positioned onto a prepared sheet piled foundation.

Steel frameworks were fabricated to bolt onto threaded sockets cast in the concrete for mounting the tilting weir, as well as steel cross members, catwalks, stop-log channels and grating. These were all then hot dip galvanised for protection.

All the components were delivered on a Friday afternoon, allowing assembly of the structure as pictured on the Saturday morning. Because all fixings and connections are cast accurately in the concrete there was no drilling required on site.

Mass concrete was poured into the centre sections, and then the tilting weir, cover plates, handrail, and gratings fitted.

This design provided a cost effective easy to install structure that was practical to operate and maintain.
